I feel as though Resolution 2025-19, decorum for band meetings goes against the Shivwits Constitutional by-laws.
Article XI section (3) states, “These meetings are to be discussed openly and freely.
I looked up the phrase free conversation, which states: An unstructured conversation or an exchange of Ideas where participants can speak their minds and
share opinions without fear of censorship, judgment, or negative consequences
All participants are encouraged to contribute their knowledge, thoughts, criticism, and ideas, regardless of how difficult or different they are from other participants.
Freedom of expression: The right to seek, perceive, and impart information and ideas without reprise or interference.
What the Shivwits band council is doing, is blatant CENSORSHIP, by stopping or closing band meetings, giving warnings, and threats of expulsion from future band meetings, because they don’t like what is said about them or the opinion of band members is not in line with what the council perceives as right.
Not only does the Shivwits Constitution give us this right of free speech, but the Paiute Constitution and the United States of America’s Bill of Rights also give us this freedom.
I think the 2025-19 Rules of decorum for band meetings should be repealed.
There’s an old proverb, which says,” If you can’t take the heat get out of the kitchen.
